When you’re clearing out your house, before you chuck everything into a Goodwill bag, check this list to be sure you’re not throwing away valuable items!
Books: It might look like a dusty old book, but if you recognize the title, check the edition. Originals of hot titles like The Wizard of Oz or Lord of the Rings bring big bucks. And, of course, anything signed, from books to album covers, is worth evaluating.
Collectible cards: Probably ever kid in America collected some kind of card at one time or another, from baseball to Mario to Pokemon. And some of those cards are worth a pretty penny to the completist collectors out there. Check values on eBay or specialty sites before your grandkids demand their dad’s old cards.
Unopened toys: Barbies, Tonka trucks, Thomas trains and more—if they’re out of print and you have them new, you could be sitting on a gold mine. Lego sets are especially popular commanding up to thousands of dollars for new sets that were released even a decade ago. Even used Lego sets can sell for far more than original price. So can toy packaging! In other words, if you’ve got old toys, don’t toss them without checking their values. You’d be amazed at what collectors will pay.
Jewelry: Especially with vintage costume jewelry being such a bit, don’t toss Aunt Gert’s box of trinkets until you give it a thorough going-over. Check for gold and silver hallmarks, precious gems, or even a costume piece that just “looks nice.” Research values, and then take it your local Fort Lauderdale pawn shop to see if you can turn it into cash.
